Details

Forming a circle, four quarter-round boxes display the ancient technique of lacquerware. Though the art form originated in China, the technique spread to northern Thailand centuries ago and firmly took hold there. Artisan Nantana Sompamitre crafts this set of four small boxes from mango wood and paints them carefully with floral motifs in tones of yellow and red.

Carol

A lot of work was involved in this from carving the mango wood, crushing different tones of eggshells and applying them in a pattern and then the lacquer and sanding after to make a gorgeous vase! It proudly sits in my living room, and reminds me of the dark night skies over Haiti, where they also like mangos. Nice work , Nantana!
