Gathered in front of the church in Chichicastenango, Guatemala, local townspeople enjoy a tradition known as el palo volador, or "the flying pole." Inspired by pre-Hispanic traditions, the flying pole is a performance where dancers swing from ropes atop a giant pole. Vicente Simaj paints this folk art composition, using his work to capture the culture and history of his country.
