Details

Wilfredo Rios calls upon the past to design this elegant rectangular table featuring four TV trays can be folded and stored beneath. He crafts the tables of mohena wood, and the table tops of leather with a dark brown hue. Rios adorns the table with the impressive image of the Inca god Wiracocha, who created the heavens, the earth, and the first generation of giants who inhabited the land in total darkness. Beside him, an ancient deity adorns the tumi, a rounded ceremonial blade that is a symbol of Peru. Rios surrounds the low relief with a constellation of the famed Nazca images.

Your Purchase Makes a Difference!

Now in his eighties, Wilfredo continues to work, handcrafting each piece of his furniture with traditional techniques. He says simply, "My art is my life." In his early teens, Wilfredo learned the art of leatherwork in a workshop where most of the employees were profoundly deaf. Through the years, he worked his family out of extreme poverty and eventually opened his own workshop. He has taught many artisans but is most proud of passing this traditional Peruvian art to his brother Abel and his son Jose. Both Abel and Jose are also Novica artisans.

Wilfredo's Novica sales are his only source of income. He is in his eighties, lives alone and struggles to provide for himself. He still thinks of growing his workshop and is thankful for the dignity and income that come from working with Novica.

Wilfredo Rios has received 4 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $600 and the most recent for $2050. Proceeds were used to invest in the purchase of raw materials for his crafts business.

This artist is an elder master and continues to actively practice their craft.

"Beautiful and Functional Art!"

Mr. Wilfredo, your artwork graces my home now. Started with the folding table, stool and end table w/drawers. Now the set of nesting tables, as well an order for my son's new home. The designs are fantastic, down to the details of little cats and fish at the cross beams. So creative! So detailed! My Dad brought our family tables from overseas on his travels and I still have them. I hope my children will continue our family tradition of supporting beautiful and functional art. As well, you are an inspiration to me as I get older. Be well and thank you. Aloha.
