Gazing downward with heavy-lidded eyes, a personage seems contemplative. His is an important task, for this is the mediator of conflicts. Gleaming brass repoussé covers the features, sculpted in sese wood and polished to a deep luster. The elongated nose echoes the curve of pursed lips in this thoughtful design by Juliana Akandas. She names it Bango, or "mediator" in the language of Ethiopia, where such masks are used to intercede for the village when there is trouble.
