Wearing a dress of fig leaves, Catrina arrives on the Day of the Dead as an honored guest. Political cartoonist Jose Guadalupe Posadas created this renowned character in the early 1900's as a critique of Mexico's bourgeoisie, and to remind them they are mortals too. The Catrina name refers to death personified who is always dressed in exuberant fashion and colors in order to lure mortals. Always creative, Armando Ramírez sculpts her image by upcycling a wide variety of metal pieces including wire mesh for the broad-brimmed bonnet while sheet metal scraps are transformed into her gown, shawl and handbag. Wires become her arms and shape her jewelry.

Ramírez does not give his sculptures a fine polished finish, therefore smudges and scratches may be present.

"Glances Retooled"

Waited until this year to order this ingenuous sculpture. Admire the tradition that the piece encapsulates and will be inspired by the lady's glamour.

"Glamorous Catrina is a Hit!"

I have delayed in writing a review for Mr. Ramirez's beautiful work, but wasted no time whatsoever in enjoying Glamorous Catrina! The photos do not do her justice - she is quite imposing, and stands in my guest bathroom where she garners lots of compliments! The drape of her dress and the handbag are particularly appealing to me The workmanship is detailed and very well-finished. Although she is described as rustic in one of the tags, she actually is quite smooth and softly polished - quite a tactile treat. She is well worth the investment! Your artistry is very impressive, Mr. Ramirez!

"LOVE Catrina!"

Excellent craftsmanship lends a certain whimsical quality to my Catrina. Very finely done!! The price, for this piece, is more than reasonable and I recommend this to anyone who enjoys the Day of the Dead. My only gripe was it took way to long to receive. But, I'm over it now that I see what I got!!
