Costa Rican Traditional Balsa Wood Mask of Jaguar & Iguana, "Boruca Fauna"
The Boruca people from Costa Rica hold annual celebrations known as the Dance of the Devils to mark their battles against the Spanish conquerors. From December 31st through January 2nd, they dress in traditional attire, celebrate with special dances and also wear masks carved by hand from wood to resemble the ones used as armor by their warriors during the Spanish conquest battles. The artisans of Costa Rica's Association of So Cagru Indigenous Women pay homage to these masks with a unique decorative accent to display on the wall depicting a jaguar and an iguana, carved from balsa wood and painted by hand in vibrant colors.
