Legend tells how West African kente cloth was inspired by the intricate work of forest spiders weaving their webs. Ghana's Madam Adwoa and Onyame Akwan Dooso present a modern interpretation of this textile tradition in this vibrant shawl. A cotton blend is artfully handwoven to form striped and geometric motifs. Each strip of kente cloth requires considerable effort, and the looms are worked with both hands and feet. Each color of the kente cloth contains symbolism; the yellow represents glory and royalty, while the green represents growth and harmony.
Madam Adwoa and Onyame Akwan Dooso has received 5 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $2000 and the most recent for $250. Proceeds were used to invest in the purchase of wood, polish, sandpaper and wood stain for production.
