Chulucanas-Style Ceramic Bull Sculpture, "Swirly Chulucanas Bull"

Peru's Santodio Paz works with methods that pre-date the Inca Empire to create this marvelous ceramic bull sculpture. To achieve the colorful patterns and the contrasting dark finish, the artisan uses a slip to mask areas of the colored clay with spiral patterns. The piece is then smoked with burning mango leaves, which gives it the dark color. The slip is then removed to reveal the spirals.
