Introduced to indigenous communities by the Spanish, the bull is seen as a symbol of protection and energy. Crafted of ceramic, this particular depiction of the bull is known as el torito de Pucará (bull of Pucara). Peru's Lulli Luca presents this figurine, crafted by local artisans. They give the bull a silver finish with hand-painted designs in black.
According to the legend of the torito de Pucara, the town of Pucara experienced a severe drought that prevented the townsfolk from growing food. In order to appease the gods, the townspeople chose a bull that would be sacrificed on the top of a mountain. On its way up the mountain, the bull resisted, and punctured the side of the mountain with its horn. From the hole issued a flood of water that gave the town enough to grow crops with. To this day the bull is revered.
