Elite Aztec warriors wore headdresses denoting their honored status as eagle, jaguar and serpent warriors, or knights. Working in terracotta, Rita Sandoval depicts an eagle warrior as a skull wearing a helmet-like eagle headdress, the open beak protecting his face. Skulls appear frequently in the art of the Mexica, as the Aztecs called themselves, and a full-body sculpture of this warrior with feathers and talons can be seen in the Templo Mayor Museum in downtown Mexico City.
