Elite Aztec warriors wore headdresses denoting their honored status as eagle, jaguar and serpent warriors, or knights. Working in terracotta, Rita Sandoval depicts a jaguar warrior as a skull wearing a helmet-like headdress of the oceotl. Swift and usually lethal, these jaguar knights are sometimes depicted in the codices wearing suits of jaguar fur. Skulls appear frequently in the art of the Mexica, as the Aztecs called themselves, and a full-body sculpture of this warrior can be seen in the Templo Mayor Museum in downtown Mexico City.
