Canancol Corn Protector Cedar Wood Hand Carved Sculpture, "Canancol"

Guatemalan artisan Nicolas Chavez Sojuel hand-carves this cedar sculpture that depicts Canancol, the protector of corn fields. According to Maya legend, after ceremonial rites are performed, straw figures placed in a corn field would come to life at night and keep the corn safe from thieves. This image shows Canancol in feathered headdress kneeling amid tasseled maize, lifting his hands skyward as he gives thanks for the rain that nourishes the corn.
