Bright colors and golden accents bring life to this hand-carved and painted mask by Bali's Nyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family. Believed to be king of the spirits, Barong is a panther-like creature that figures prominently in Balinese legend. He is the leader of the hosts of good, and enemy of Rangda, the demon queen. The battle between Barong and Rangda is featured in the Barong dance and represents the eternal battle between good and evil.

Preserving Traditions
Subrata has been a master carver for many years. He is one of the original Novica artisans and now provides work to other artisans at his carving workshop. He has trained his daughter, Indrawati, in all aspects of his business and she will keep the workshop going when Subrata no longer is able to.
