Balinese Handcarved Wood Mask of Sita Wife of Rama, "Beautiful Sita"
In this magnificent Suar wood mask, Nyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family captures the beauty and poise of Sita, wife of the Hindu Lord Rama. She works the wood with supreme mastery and exquisite detail. Sita's smooth complexion is framed by an intricate headdress, allowing for a remarkable contrasting texture.
In the Ramayana epic, Sita is kidnapped by Rawana, the demon-king, and held hostage in his palace. Rawana coaxes Sita to stay with him and be his lover. Sita shields herself from Rawana's lust long enough for her husband, Rama, and an army of monkeys to rescue her. Sita now represents supreme devotion and compassion.

"Magnificent!"
Barong is now busy protecting the house, frightening evil spirits but grinning heartily at the rest of us. He has added a colorful and life-enhancing presence that is a delight to encounter daily. After his arrival I particularly enjoyed watching Barong dance rituals on YouTube and highly recommend them to anyone contemplating ordering the mask since you ll understand his significance and character better. Incidentally, I had no trouble hanging him on the wall with a tiny bit of ingenuity.

"Wedding gift"
Absolutely beautiful. I gave this pair as a wedding gift and the recipients loved them. A unique piece of art has more meaning than a store bought, massed produced article and supports the craftsmen and their family. Please dont hesitate if considering a carving by the Subrata Family. You will not be disappointed.

Preserving Traditions
Subrata has been a master carver for many years. He is one of the original Novica artisans and now provides work to other artisans at his carving workshop. He has trained his daughter, Indrawati, in all aspects of his business and she will keep the workshop going when Subrata no longer is able to.
