This beautifully bold mask design is the original concept of Ghana's Elias Dela Dorkenoo. He carves the mask by hand from sese wood and adds embossed aluminum, with markings on the cheeks reminiscent of tribal scarification. Certain features--including the eyelids--are accented with red and blue paint, while the remainder receives a polished brown finish. The forehead is adorned with the Akan adinkra symbol gye nyame, which represents the omnipotence and supremacy of God.
