Carved by hand, this handsome mask depicts a personage from the Bajokwe tribe of Congo, formerly Zaire. Sinclair Yao Daley gives it a smooth finish with rich brown color from natural cola nut dye. "This mask and Bajokwe dances suggest that they once used them in celebrating initiation rites," the artisan explains. The word "Bajokwe" means "purification."

"Bundu woman"
After visiting Sierra Leone and dancing with the Bundu women group, I fell in love. This is a great and authentic carving, one of very few offered from Sierra Leone.
