Details

Among the Nazca people of ancient Peru, there exists a legend of an orca that captured the heads of humans. Walter Jose Acosta depicts the creature in an intriguing huaco, or clay vessel. Heads captured by the whale appear within its sleek body but visible nonetheless as the creature prepares to dive into its kingdom deep in the ocean. In the Nazca lines, fish characters allude to this deity.

"Beautiful Craftsmanship!"

This stirrup spout vessel is truly remarkable. As someone who is passionate about civilizations of the pre-Columbian era, the Moche culture of Peru is one of the most fascinating. Ive been reading about the place of bats within pre-Columbian civilizations recently and have been astonished by the rich history and allegory that surrounds bats in the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica and South America. I will treasure this piece of art for the rest of my days.
