Details

Townspeople dressed in white parade through the streets of Ile Ife, Nigeria, in this painting by Mukaila Ayoade. Reenacted each year, the festival of Itapa tells the story of Obatala and Oduduwa. Obatala was the eldest of the orisha spirits but Oduduwa usurped him; thus an epic feud ensued. Obatala won; his name means "king and ruler of white cloth" in the Yoruba language, because he always dressed in white.
