Nyoman Lentong seems to have a never-ending well of inspiration as he continues to carve bamboo flutes well into his 96 years of age. From his special birthday edition, this suling (flute) is painted by hand with coconut ash depicting the kidnapping of Sita by the evil king Rahwana, while a mystical dragon slithers down the back of the flute. Lentong wiles the hours away carving flutes by hand with a sharp knife. They are fit for Bali's traditional gamelan orchestra.
The legendary Ramayana Hindu epic tells of Rama and Sita living in exile in the forest. One day, when Rama went hunting, Sita followed a golden deer, not knowing it was Rahwana luring her away to kidnap. The Ramayana details the Rama's quest to save his beloved.
