The Deer Dance Curated by: Una Who Wanders
Antonio Coche's magnificent folk art painting captures the movement of this traditional mayan dance. The dance, accompanied by marimba music, celebrates the animals who helped to deliver the mayans from the conquistadores. Masks, such as these by Jose Canil Ramos, are worn by dance participants. Vilma Leticia Chile finds the inspiration for her masks, interpreted as holiday ornaments, in the deer dance and other Guatemalan folk tales.
