Explore NOVICA's Taxco Jewelry Gallery. High in the Sierra Madre Mountains, Taxco silversmiths made gifts for the Aztec gods long before the Spaniards arrived; but it took the persistant vision of American architect William Spratling, credited with fathering the modern Mexican silver movement, to put Taxco on the jewelry collector's map. Spratling's vision lives on in the amazing handcrafted silver necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings created by talented Taxco Jewelry artisans.

My third purchase from this artisan

I couldn't wait for these to arrive. Neither too big or small for so many dress styles. His craftsmanship is exacting ,balanced and extremely well made for years of enjoyment. Sr. Arregui 's joy in life come thru in his collection.

Taxco Jewelry

Located amid rich silver mining veins, the colonial mountain town of Taxco, often referred to as ‘the silver capital of the world’ is famous for its centuries-old jewelry-making tradition. At one time, the Taxco silver jewelry smith culture was disappearing before the world’s eyes due to the advent of war and revolutions. It wasn’t until the arrival of US architect and designer William Spratling in 1928 that Taxco jewelry history was restored. Spratling caught wind of the skilled craftsmanship that once filled the streets of Taxco and reopened many of the silver mines that had been closed. He then located artisans who still practiced the ancient craft and encouraged them to teach others. At that time, Taxco’s silver jewelry tradition was based on Mexico's pre-Hispanic art and traditional designs. Today, Taxco Mexican jewelry features contemporary styles as well, including modern necklaces, exquisite cuff jewelry and Taxco earrings. Browse through NOVICA's Taxco jewelry gallery to discover the distinctive handcrafted beauty of silver mined in Mexico.
