“My name is Carolina Figueroa. A proud Guatemalan, I was born in Acatenango, surrounded by the marvel of nature. I was raised in a very humble family. The main pillar of my family was always my mother, who raised us by herself. Being the oldest child, I would take care of house chores, such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care of my younger brothers when she went to work. Unfortunately, since I had to help my mom, I was not able to complete my studies.
“From a young age, my mother taught me a limitless number of textile techniques, and because of this, I fell in love with crochet. The first pieces that I made were not very pretty, but my mom taught me to continue following my dreams. Each day was a new challenge; I worked during the day and crocheted a little bit at night. I sold what I crocheted in order to have another source of income. With each sale, our situation improved by a little bit.
“Thanks to God, who gave us the strength to carry on, we both continued to work. As they got older, my brothers also started helping us pay expenses, which helped strengthen our bonds. We are a very united family that always looks out for each other. Since then, I have formed a beautiful family of my own. My husband supports me so I can follow my dreams.
“I began to crochet out of the need to make money, but today, it is something that fills me with a lot of satisfaction. It entertains me and impassions me. Because of this, I am always looking for new ways to expand my craft and sell more items, but above all, I want to be able to contribute to the development of our country.
“These days, my beautiful mother is dealing with illness, and regrettably, she has not been able to continue crocheting. But, she helps me every day that she can; she gives me new ideas and is always at my side to give me the motivation to continue.
“My sons are the primary drive in my life. They teach me new things, and are always looking out for opportunities for me. Through and for them, I have been able to carry on, but above all else, I want them to have the same satisfaction that I get from my work, which I do with a lot of love and satisfaction. I dream of seeing my sons graduated with stable jobs that help them achieve great things in the future. This will be yet another step towards fulfilling my great dream. I am completely thankful because my strength has carried me through it all, bringing me to become a part of the Novica family.”
