Tradition and imagination are the two factors that influence the design of African masks. Many patterns are symmetrical or geometric, and the details can be used to construe social status or religious powers. This mask, of Abdulai Osman Adam's original design, is crafted from native sese wood. It is further embellished with acrylic paint, and is representative of the aduma masks of Gabon.
