Details

Wearing an extraordinary headdress, a fierce visage bares his teeth. Bands of color cross his mouth and textured plates of brass adorn his cheeks and forehead. Evans Doe Martey sculpts a powerful portrait of the Gelada association, a Yoruba secret society open only to males. Members traditionally use costume, songs and dances to please and placate women who possess special spiritual powers. "I carved this piece to exhibit the Yoruba Gelada's headdress," Martey confides.

Crafted by hand of sese wood, this mask includes an iron stand.

"Engagement Gift"

I gave this to my son and his fiance when they became engaged. They love African art and I wanted them to have a reminder to love each other. It is a beautifully carved mask that isnt overpowering, only inspiring.
