Mali is host to a variety of distinguished and characteristic cultures. This sculpture is hand-carved from wood in the shape of a chiwara, used as a ritual object by the Bamana people. This particular chiwara depicts the mythological half-man, half-antelope, believed to have taught ancient humans how to cultivate plants in the soil. West Africa's Emmanuel Austin Ankude creates this image, crafting it through a painstaking process that takes weeks to complete.

"Striking handsome statue"
Very masculine piece, beautifully finished. Its posture conveys an impression of strength, prowess and resilience, which I expect would have been the tribal intent of these sort of pieces. Will be treasured, thanks
