Known as the Tree of Life, a mysterious tree reveals humans emerging from an opening in the side, suggesting it depicts a creation story. Ruben and Gilda Perez recreate the images on the monumental Stela 5 from Izapa. The Guatemalan artisans etch the intricate motifs into natural jade and display the plaque on a black pinewood base.

One of Ruben and Gilda's assistants was in a motorcycle accident several years ago. He injured his foot, which left him without a job. Ruben and Gilda have hired this man with pride as he is a hard worker and a great asset to their team.
Preserving Traditions
Ruben and Gilda's parents taught them the value of hard work and that art is an expression of culture. Many of their designs include jade, which was highly valued by ancient civilizations in the area and used as ornaments, tools, and burial artifacts. Their artwork is often a reflection of Guatemalan culture and they used techniques passed down over generations.
Moving On Up
Thanks to their hard work and partnership with NOVICA, Ruben and Gilda have been able to build their own house and support their children's education. They hope to continue to grow their sales through NOVICA so they do not have to seek out other, more complicated markets.
