Expressionist Painting of the Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus, "Our Lady of the Northeast"

Ezequias works in his own hallmark style as he depicts the Virgin of Sorrows. Although she is usually painted in the style of Byzantine art, this beautiful portrait shows the Virgin as a young woman from Brazil's Northeastern region and, indeed, she is known as Our Lady of the Northeast. She holds little Jesus in her lap, the child dressed in colonial garb, and both are enveloped in golden light.
