As day breaks in Northeastern Brazil, the farm is bustling with activity in this naif portrait by Ivan Borges. The cow is milked, chickens fed and water fetched from the river where an industrious young man is fishing. Everyone gets an early start to avoid the midday heat in "Amanhecer na Fazenda."

"Country Courtship" depicts a couple dallying in a hidden countryside bower in the shade of a cashew tree. Birds serenade them and a lizard watches curiously. Suggesting the Garden of Eden, a serpent slithers up the tree trunk in "O Namoro do Matuto."

Wearing ammunition bandoliers and carrying rifles, "Lampião and Pretty Maria" are legendary heroes. They were bandits in Northeastern Brazil where residents were often deprived of their rights and subject to the violence of police and the hired gunmen of local political bosses. Led by Lampião, these bandits stole from rich landowners and created a network of vigilantes who resisted the political regime of the early 1900s.

Borges transfers the woodcut images to white ceramic tiles and frames all three in a single composition.
