When a community pulls together to help its own, happiness is contagious. So when one of our own NOVICA artisans came to us concerned about the happiness of members of his community, we knew the time was right to implement another NOVICA Happiness Project. Only this time, we’d love to invite YOU to join in!
Introducing Kids’ Carousel preschool
Peruvian weaver Alfredo Falcon lives in Huaycán, an industrial park near Lima, that houses thousands of immigrant settlers from all over the region. Alfredo makes sweaters and accessories out of alpaca wool and works near a preschool called Kids’ Carousel, which he proposed as the beneficiary of this Happiness Project.
A visit to Kids’ Carousel from our Peru office team members revealed a brightly-painted classroom with many smiling children and an obviously dedicated Moms Committee, but the space is in acute need of assistance. The roof has holes, the chairs are broken, the classroom supplies are low or non-existent, and the restroom desperately needs a make-over — all urgent needs, as the rainy season has now come to Huaycán. Most of the kids need winter coats, too.
Meet Jean Paul
One child and his family, however, seemed to especially need our help. 5-year-old Jean Paul is not able to eat breakfast at home and cannot bring any lunch to the preschool. His friends share their food with him, if they have any extras. Jean Paul’s father left his family, and his mother Idma doesn’t have enough to make ends meet.
How we’re spreading happiness
To spread happiness in this community, NOVICA staff, artisans and community members have banded together to complete this project and help Jean Paul. We like to do things with our hands, and the many skilled craftspeople and builders in this group are all chipping in. We just need help to buy the supplies.
How to get involved:
We’ve started an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funds for the supplies needed to give Kids’ Carousel and Jean Paul the help they need. The children in Huaycán are brimming with excitement — stop by our campaign and get involved today!
