Agate Necklaces: From Pendants to Perfect Strands

Agate and Sterling Silver on Leather Necklace, 'Uniquely Pink'

Agate is a unique and interesting gemstone characterized by its fineness of grain and brightness of hue. The stone is most often associated with volcanic rocks and can vary in color, layering, and porosity.  Depending on what types of matter are present as the agate forms, the stones can be white, gray, light blue, orange, red, or black, or some combination thereof.  The stones can also be banded: this is because agate can fill veins or cracks in the volcanic rock, and when cut transversely, exhibit a succession of parallel lines.

These distinctive characteristics make agate ideal for jewelry, and necklaces seem to best display the beauty of the stone.  For as many styles of necklace that exist, there is a perfect agate stone to accomplish the intended look.

Agate and Carnelian Y Necklace, 'Summer Flower'

Y-necklaces are an easy and fun way to complement a low or scoop-necked shirt.  The piece above pairs agate with carnelian to form, as its name indicates, a beautiful summer flower. For those with particularly lovely collar bones who love to wear chokers, consider the piece below, which features dyed magnesite pebbles and iridescent pearls in addition to agate.

If you prefer a larger, even brighter piece of jewelry, consider this braided leather necklace, which is sure to catch the eye! Six beaded strands are interwoven in a braid to form the focal point, and each strand is threaded with recycled vinyl beads in a mix of pink, blue, brown, yellow, red, orange, black, and green. The large agate stones serve as spacers.

A particularly elegant option is the filigree pendant necklace.  The selection below features handcrafted sterling silver filigree motifs in the shape of a leaf, with dyed green agate stones dangling beneath.

Beaded necklaces are so versatile. They can be worn with casual attire or with clothes that require more elegant accessories. The following necklace uses chip-cut agate beads in a variety of colors and the stunning pendant in green hues is actually crafted using recycled plastic bottles! Talk about going green!

I personally love the banded stones.  The collar-style necklace is absolutely lovely and features a free-form agate in a setting flash-plated in gleaming yellow gold. What a unique piece from artisans in Brazil!  If you don’t like a collar necklace but love the stone, take heart–the suede cord ties around the neck at the desired length.

There are two additional necklaces that I must include.  Above, drusy agate, one of the most beautiful stones I’ve ever seen is set in gold-plated brass.  You can see it glistening even in two-dimensional form!  Below is a very intricate and breathtaking piece combining carnelian, jasper, quartz, calcite, amazonite, and garnet with agate on a graceful spiral.

Agate stones are uniquely beautiful, and though they can certainly hold their own without the help of additional stones, they can easily enhance other gems as well.  Whether you prefer long necklaces with a single stone pendant or beaded chokers featuring a variety of colors, there is an agate necklace out there for you!
