Update (July, 2019)

“My name is George Asante, from the heart of Aburi in the Eastern Region. I am now one of the chief carvers in Aburi. With my over 30 years experience in carving, I have been able to train seven artists how to carve and finish wood works; two of them are female and five are male. I can say that art is now part and parcel of me.

“Twenty years ago I joined NOVICA. As soon as the local sourcing team listed my items, right away I started making sales. I made a decision to use the money I earned from NOVICA to cater for my children’s school fees, and my children have all completed the tertiary institution now. I also started working with NOVICA at a time when I had no workshop, but now I have two workshops and I have employed 3 people who attend to customers at the shops.

“My sales have dropped recently, but the money I earn from NOVICA is now helping me rent a good place. Also I am putting up my own building in Aburi. I am still training some more individuals to carve and finish. My primary goal is to develop some more new designs with NOVICA and sell more. I must say thank you to NOVICA for showing me the right path.”

Original Artisan Story

George Asante was born in 1963 in a suburb of Accra. In 1982 – just one year after leaving high school – he sojourned in the Republic of Nigeria for some four years, coming back to Ghana in 1986 to invest a little capital he had accumulated while there.

After a while, convinced that better fortunes in life awaited him, he turned to wood and the talent of carvers in the Akuapim hills. In 1990 he settled there to begin training as a carver. By the time he graduated, Asante had become the real artist he always knew he was. Four years of careful training had not been undertaken for common standards. Not only did Asante's background knowledge of woodworking help him, but an innate acumen contrived to bring to the surface a reckonable and talented carver.

Asante, who is married and shares three sweet children with his wife, believes in the strengths and aesthetic values of the woods that he and other colleagues transform into works of art. For good reason, he works out many different forms from these materials – sese wood, cedar wood and twenenboa wood in particular.
