Original paintings and prints in Central America
“My name is Monica Llinás, originally from San José, Costa Rica. I was born in 1974. An enterprising, hardworking and talented person, I enjoy hiking in the mountains, trekking, and cooking.
“I enjoyed my childhood with my maternal family; my grandmother, great-grandmother, my grandmother's cousins and aunts, who met almost every afternoon to paint in a garden with fruit trees and orchids. That is how my love for painting began, as they taught me the basis of art. I remember that, as a child, I was the one who washed brushes and prepared the paper and easels for the aunts and cousins to have on hand when painting in the afternoons. I still have some brushes and pigments from my great-grandmother and grandmother. The relationship and connection with the family and painting was great. Even though my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother are gone, painting is that connection, that bond, a matriarchal heritage between us. I also love to paint. Time passed and my older relatives died, so the tradition of painting every afternoon ended, but that love for painting remained in me. My first work was an oil painting that I still have, as my grandmother explained to me how to do it. Although I also remember that my grandmother scolded me because I did not draw well in my early days; those moments made a mark on me.
“I graduated from the university in arts, and I have been practicing my profession for more than 25 years. Apart from the teachings of my grandmother, my teacher Luis Daell taught me a lot, and thus my interest in art grew greater. To make my works I use graphite pencils, charcoal, watercolors and acrylics, but my favorite is oil. I very much identify with nature, in part because my maternal family loved painting landscapes of Costa Rica, and partly because I love the variety of nature that exists in this country. It is what inspires me the most, and I love transmitting love by nature.
“As a result of the pandemic, and the lack of work and not selling anything, it occurred to me to make cushions of my paintings, among other products. In this way I started as an artisan of my own work. I am very happy for this opportunity, because you will have a piece of my art, of the love and affection for nature that I admire so much.”
