“I am the third born of six children. Two of my siblings passed away, leaving me and my three sisters. My parents were farmers. When I was young, my dad passed away and life became very difficult. My mom was also frequently falling ill and couldn’t carry on with the farm. My siblings and I had to drop out of school. My siblings dropped out at the primary level and I dropped out of junior high. I was 18 years old by then.
“After dropping out of school, I started wood carving in order to support my family. I chose carving because I realized that I am a talented and creative person, and it was a good way to make money. With my hardworking spirit and good attitude, I underwent apprenticeship for four years with Mr. Emmanuel Opare to learn and perfect the craft. I paid him for the training.
“At the age of 22, I became a master and worked with my teacher for a while before moving into my own shop, which I acquired in 2013. Acquiring the shop was a mountain of a task, but I am very happy that I was able to do it. I have taught this craft to five people--one woman and four men--who also make a living from this business.
“I am married with four beautiful children; two girls and two boys. My wife is a trader. My children are all in school. When I have large orders, my kids come around to help, and it is always fun having them around. My dream is to make enough money to support my family and my children’s education. I am so excited about NOVICA, since it’s an international platform to sell my craft.”
