Update (August, 2019)

“I always felt passionate about Mexican culture; to say nothing for the beautiful weavings of the southeast. I dedicated myself to looking for a way to express them in a common article such as a notebook.

“I consider myself a self-taught woman who always wants to learn, this has led me to be constantly training and taking workshops. Several of them from artisans who specialize in the weaving with a waist loom. It is thanks to these artisans and their beautiful disposition to share their fabrics that I have managed to create beautiful color combinations.

“It is common for artisans to work in community; so this is a beautiful opportunity to provide employment to several families and share our vision by publicizing their beautiful work.

“One of the biggest challenges that I have had to face is the social traditions of some communities in the southeast of the country. Especially those pertaining to gender. Some of the artisans I collaborate with face these issues daily. They are women full of passion for what they do, but due to the traditions of their culture; most stay working from home.

“I think that being original in the products you present gives you an extra boost. If you present a top quality product, you have the unique opportunity to showcase a whole community and its beautiful traditions.”

Original Artisan Story

"I was born in Venezuela where my grandmother shared with me her liking of book binding by hand. I wanted to explore the process and discovered a passion for the craft.

"For me, crafting and binding notebooks and journals is a means of communication and a way to share an ancestral art. What I like best is using my designs to showcase incredible handloomed fabrics and the talented Maya women who weave them.

"We use recycled materials, including wood, recycled paper, vegetable fiber cords, and handwoven textiles. My designs are 100% ecological.

"Chiapas is our great inspiration — its mountains and forests, lakes and rivers, its mysticism and diversity.

"Each artisan has a way of expressing her art. We began this bookbinding project as a means by which they could share their work. I have faith in this project. We seek to make these textiles appreciated and preserved, as these weaving techniques aren't practiced as widely as they once were.

"When I made this my mission, I felt a roller-coaster of emotions. I had to learn to communicate in a foreign country. For me, Mexico has been the opportunity to achieve my dreams. I love and admire this beautiful country.

"Through my notebooks and journals, we've been able to encourage reading and drawing for the children in this region. We provide work for mothers and reinforce the love of cultural diversity in Mexico."
