Asayaw Osahene Asante
"I am very impulsive and with acrylics I can paint faster than usual... oils slow me down.""I was born in 1980 in Kumasi, in the Ashanti region known as the garden city of Ghana. Growing up here, I was amazed by nature’s wonders and beauty, as became proud of the richness within Ashanti culture and history.
"Much to my family's consternation, I enrolled in Kumasi's College of Art and Industry. They wanted me to study textile design, which they thought would offer me a better source of income. But I wanted to follow my heart. I had started to draw and paint at the age of seven, and sculpt at the age of 11, so I felt driven to pursue my 'mission impossible.'
"I started studying the basics of art by learning about forms, color and tones. In the pursuance of this, I understudied another artist popularly known as 'Azey' at his studio in Kumasi. By the time I graduated I was already participating in group exhibitions.
"I am particularly fond of using what I call 'African colors,' is a great discipline of the semi-abstract style. Traditions are my favorite themes and I derive great inspiration from nature. My favorite medium is acrylic. I am very impulsive and with acrylics I can paint faster than usual. Oils slow me down.
"My motivation comes from God, who is the creator of all things. I am also inspired by the works of great artists and I hope one day people will get to know my work and regard it as important as that of other famous artists.
"I have exhibited my paintings at the Alliance Francaise in Kumasi, the Kumasi Cultural Center and the Loom at Accra. My works have also been represented in the USA, London and South Africa."
