    'Learn to Play Music' (1993)

Flute, drum and tambourine weave halting melodies as three young musicians play together. Seated on the ground, the children are lost in their music. Sutikno paints an enchanted portrait of the chubby-cheeked little ones as they recreate the hypnotic rhythms of the gamelan. Visual textures in rich pastel tones enhance a charming composition.

    Sutikno

Sutikno was born in the village of Kediri in eastern Java on August 14, 1962. He became interested in painting as he took notice of other children in the village who were learning art. After graduating from high school he went on to study at the ISI (Institute of Indonesian Art). Since then, painting has been much more than a hobby – it has become a part of his life. "I chose to pursue a career as a professional artist, even though many warned me it would be difficult to earn a living in such a field," confides the artist. Presently Sutikno lives in Bali, with his wife and two children.

Sutikno's works have been exhibited extensively in Bali and Java. He has participated in a collective exhibition in Guam, as well as being chosen as Indonesia's representative for the Asian art workshop held in Manila, Philippines in 1986.
