"Hello. My name is Santosh Kumar and I was born near the town of Banaras. I am not really sure when I was born but I am around 24 years old now. My involvement in weaving was out of compulsion, since farming was the only way of survival in the village and farming was insufficient to support my family.
"I was inspired by my friends in Banaras who were already involved in weaving. I thought I could do it, but one needs to be really patient and talented to master this craft. I had to give of myself to be able to achieve the very best work. However, I instantly fell in love with the art and since then there has been no turning back.
"Today this is my only source of living and, as time went by, I have learned and mastered the technique of all kinds of
banarasi articles – silk and cotton embroidery in home furnishings, scarves and shawls.
"I have seven or eight people assisting me, and I want to teach my craft to others so that they don't have to be dependent on farming alone for survival. I have participated in government-sponsored exhibitions and received a good response – this gives me confidence. I am very glad to be working with Novica."
