    Ghanaian wood masks, 'Justice' (pair)

Sleek, imposing, and fearful, this pair of masks by Kwasi Forson captures the imposing nature of a high-ranking official. Inspired by the judiciary tradition of West Africa, horned masks were used by people of authority when casting judgments or seeking to terrify wrongdoers. Forson hand-carves the features of the masks from sese wood and applies black polish for a lustrous finish.

An artisan story card will be included with your purchase.

"I was born on February 22, 1970 in the eastern region of Ghana. I had a chance to meet a friend of my brother who works with him as a carver. This happened when I was visiting my brother after my middle school education and I had nothing to do. Sometimes I would go there to help him at the shop. It then happened that my brother traveled and left the shop for me to run with his friend the carver; it was then that his friend took that opportunity to teach me how to carve, having seen the great talent in me. It was really a great time I had learning when my brother was away for two years. After those two years I worked with him for some time and now on my own. I really love the carving profession and put all my strength in it to come out with the best. I am married with a daughter who is six years old."
