"I see masks everywhere - in the clouds and even in flower arrangements. It is as if I were conditioned to compose these forms."
"I've been working with my hands since I was a child. It is as though I was bitten by something that impels me to express myself with them. I was an art teacher for 26 years and only after retiring could I dedicate myself to what I like to do most: let the mind go free and create masks.
"I am the daughter of parents from Bahia, and like every good Bahian I have always been interested in crafts. I have already worked with leather and sisal. My father always helped me make tapestries and objects. I ended up becoming a grade school teacher, and I worked for five years giving workshops to children while enrolled in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Brazil. Once graduated, I began giving classes in the plastic arts. After listening for years on end to my friends and acquaintances encouraging me to sell my work, I decided to start selling them.
"I make my pieces at home, where I spread out my materials and sit down below a giant mango tree to make the masks. My husband Joel is also my working partner. Yajo is a name that merges my own name, Yara, with my husband's, Joel. He became involved in the hardest parts of the labor.
"My process of creation is rather amusing. I see masks everywhere - in the clouds and even in flower arrangements. It is as if I were conditioned to compose these forms. I am influenced by the images I see, in museums, in books, and in everyday life.
"Novica appeared in my life like the answer to the prayers I made to God. I think that through the Internet I will be able to share my artesania with a select public and give them the treatment they deserve. I know that foreigners appreciate this work and give it more value than the average Brazilian. It was the opportunity I needed to start the new millennium off right."

FINDING YOUR SIZE
Take your measurements with the tape measure over your under garments. If your measurements fall between sizes you may prefer the next larger size. Inseam, skirt and dress lengths vary by style and will be listed in the item description. Our sweaters are knit in standard American sizes, however actual measurements vary by style.
BUST / CHEST
Measure around the fullest part of chest under the arms and over the shoulder blades keeping the tape measure level.
Measure around the smallest part of the waist keeping the tape measure comfortably loose. Most garments use the low waist measurement noted below.
Measure around the body approximately 1.5" below the natural waist (above). This is the area where most pants and skirts actually fit.
Standing with your heels together, measure around the fullest part of the body approx 7"-8" below the waist.
Measure around the base of the neck keeping the tape measure comfortably loose.
Bend elbow slightly and starting at the center back of the neck, measure across the shoulder, to the elbow and down to the wrist.
Our standard inseam length for women is 32" and 34" for men; however inseam measurements will vary slightly by style.
