    Ghanaian wood mask, 'Owo Snake'

A magnificent wooden Owo mask evokes the glory of West African culture, handcrafted by master artisan Daniel Nyadedzor. "Owo," pronounced "owwor" in the local dialect, means snake. A mystical mask, it has two intertwined snakes reclining on the crest, complimented by a striking human visage on the forehead. Another interesting feature is the smoking pipe in his open mouth. Metal plates embossed with beautiful African symbols adorn the forehead and nose.

Sese, a local wood from Eastern Ghana, is patiently hand-carved and sanded to achieve the desired form. The piece is then delicately painted with black emulsion and coated with potassium. After a careful polishing, red tones are applied to the piece to add a rustic look. This historical work makes a wonderful addition to any collection.

    Daniel Nyadedzor

Daniel Nyadedzor has been featured in the San Antonio Express News.

"I was born in May, 1972 in the eastern region of Ghana. In 1996, after finishing school and a year's national service, I decided to help my brother who was a carver and had his own shop. I did all his paperwork.

"Initially, the work done did not measure up to internationally accepted standards. Quality control was poor. However, after working with him for a few months I realized the need to incorporate certain measures. After tasking ourselves to reach the international standards, the business grew tremendously. We have been working together all these years.

"We acquire a type of hardwood known as sese for carving the masks. Other materials we use are potassium, emulsion red or black paint, metal plate and sometimes clay. There are about twenty people working with us. The nature of our work involves the chipping of wood to get a desired figure or shape. It is polished and sandpapered for a smooth and quality object. Red and black emulsion paint is then used for the finishing. The image is first sketched on paper and then given to the apprentices to carve. Sometimes, our customers also come up with interesting ideas, too.

"Our products are always given the antique finishing. Our customers especially love our antique finishing and their kind remarks and comments spur us on to do better."
