"I'm Benito Dante Amaro Oscanoa and I was born in San Pedro de Cajas in the Tarma province on March 21, 1959. My activity as an artisan began when I was 16 years old. At first, I didn't weave tapestries and crafted only smaller pieces. One day, my uncle challenged me to learn this art. I wanted to prove to him that I'm a good artisan and could learn any handicraft technique. This is how I began to weave in the style of our town and, up to now, I have never abandoned my craft.
"My uncle's influence was crucial in my learning process and later in perfecting my art and in my own constant search. I also had a family background that was rich in the arts. My sister Nilda Amaro Oscanoa is also a Novica featured craftswoman and is very proud of this. We both continue in the world of art.
"My biggest challenge has been to have to compete with friends and colleagues who are also textile artisans. However this aspect has been rewarded when each of my pieces is recognized for the high quality of its finishing. I feel that the effort I put into my works is rewarded day by day. Now, thanks to Novica, my work will be seen by the whole world."
