"Our village is well-known for wood carvings of high quality. What I am doing now is the result of my upbringing and the influence of my village during my childhood.
"For the most part, my sculptures are special Christmas ornaments. In Bali, when women marry, we move to be with the husband's family, and this was my husband's art. I've worked with him to apply new techniques for better quality.
"This period of transition and teaching was difficult for me, and it took a lot of time, effort and money. I encouraged my husband and helped train two woodworkers who collaborated with his family. They often told me I am fussy and meticulous, but I do not easily give up. This is the result of my father's teachings, that all should be well thought out, and done seriously. I will teach this to my children. They should know that to face real life, work has to be done seriously. We must work hard and pray.
"I became interested in Christmas ornaments after I went to live in my husband's family. This craft is so much fun, but these efforts did not go smoothly. With the changes in techniques, in dyes and paints, and better finishing, I could finally revive our workshop. The knowledge that my father taught during my childhood is applied, and to stick with this craft, I must continue to be creative with combining materials such as fabric painting or batik painting on ornaments that I make. It was challenging, but after getting the results in line with my expectations, it has become very pleasant.
"My designs have been widely imitated by craftsmen around me. I do not feel upset – I actually feel proud. It makes my spirit full to create something different."
