Melissa Wongkar

"I've always loved to draw. And from the time I was a little girl, interior design was my hobby. I like to imagine something, then put it on paper.

"I was born in a small province in Celebes, where I lived until I went away to college in Melbourne, Australia. It was always my dream to study at a foreign university. My parents saw my talent and encouraged me to apply for a scholarship from our local government. I took a chance, wishing so hard that I'd get one. Then, among the many names called, I heard my own! My parents are so proud of me and I was so moved and happy that I cried tears of joy.

"There were many options in the U.S., Europe and Australia. I chose Australia because it's not too far from Bali and because it's one of the best in the country. I majored in interior design. And I took a part time job in Melbourne to cover my living expenses. Day by day, I faced life with courage, ideals and aspirations.

"Soon I graduated and returned to Indonesia in 2008. I began designing decorative accents for the home and office and they were well received, so I set up my own workshop. It's been lovely – my dreams are coming true! I hope it will continue to grow."
