    'Grand Bull' (2011)

Tossing his head, a proud young bull snorts in defiance as he trots briskly through the paddock. Rippling muscles and sharp horns lend an air of bravery to the magnificent animal. Martín Pescador exalts the elegant contours in an exquisite and lifelike portrait. Yellow streaks of light lend a surreal effect.

    Titled "Gran toro" in Spanish.

An artisan story card will be included with your purchase.

"I would like to send my heartfelt gratitude to all those who, through Novica and the magic of modern communications, have felt attracted to our work and made it part of their lives. Thank you for empathizing with the same emotions that drive us to create such compositions. Although it's impossible to reach perfection, as artists we placed all our energy into our work, without reserving anything of what we can give, often despite the difficulties in easily obtaining materials in our countries. I did all I could to give you the best I have to offer. Today I am pleased to write to you this letter and express our gratitude and motivation to keep on working in these beautiful arts; in my case it allows me to draw and paint every detail of this wonderful land. My most heartfelt wishes."

"I was born in the countryside in the province of Jaen, department of Cajamarca. When I was about seven years old, I began to feel an aesthetic appreciation of all things visual. I was thirsty for all kinds of images such as the illustrations in books and magazines. My attention was drawn towards serpents, animals, and humans.

"I discovered some of my painting abilities as well as a deep appreciation for the fine arts when I was at school, without it ever being a serious or deep undertaking. During my military service at the air force base in Las Palmas, Lima, I did some mural paintings, guided by common sense.

"When I finished my military service I began to work in agriculture and other activities. It was during this period that I felt a strong yearning for painting surge within me, so I left agriculture to dedicate myself wholly to the arts. In 1992, when I was 26 years old, I gained entrance at Peru's National Autonomous School of Fine Arts where I studied for four years with an iron will. I was completely dedicated to art and trained in several mediums including sculpture, painting, engraving and drawing. Unfortunately, I had to drop out for a while due to a severe illness. I returned in 1998 and concentrated in sculpting. However, due to circumstances out of my control, I had to drop out again.

"Despite this, I can freely say that I feel an energizing disposition towards artistic activity - a praxis that puts me in contact with the divine aspect of existence. Art and the vital beauty of things lead me to bless God, supreme artist of all that is wonderful. I believe art has its mayor and highest significance in the spirit. I cannot conceive of art without God….

"With an academic background and my artistic experience, I am ready to throw myself into my art. With this in mind, I believe Novica is like a door to the world and I want to give it my best. My themes are varied in style and technique. Some of my work is about nature and it speaks by itself. Each observer will perceive the communicative elements in the volumetric dimensions of a sculpture, the spectrum of color in a painting, the valorization of a drawing and in each case, the artistic composition itself. My other work features different elements that are difficult to understand because they do not reflect reality – they are abstract."

Martin Cordova has exhibited his work in Lima and abroad, including Taiwan (1993). In 1999, he exhibited his work at the Egyptian Embassy in Peru.

Addendum: Martín has decided to change his artistic name to Martín Pescador, and will therefore be signing his most recent work accordingly. He explains the reason and significance of this change:

"Why change my last name? This change comes as a response to an internal need I feel personally, as well as in relation to the world. Pescador /i> in Spanish means 'Fisherman,' and to a certain extent we are all fishermen. Martín Pescador is more than a pseudonym; it has a connotation that defines me more accurately and gives me renewed emotional strength. If possible, I would add 'del Rosario' – it refers to the city where I was born, as well as to the rosary, the prayer I dedicate to the Immaculate Virgin Mary. With this new identity, I feel more alive and authentic. I am not doing it out of vanity or just for the sake of changing. If I had not done this before, it is just because I wasn't aware of the personal evolution I'm going through.

"To the people that have been buying my paintings I have this to say to you: Firstly, that I thank you sincerely; secondly, that though I signed my previous work as Martín Cordova, they all have an intrinsic value and that Martín Pescador was already alive in each of them. This is part of my personal and professional growth. I do not foresee any more changes – this is definite. I appreciate the welcome you have given me and now, as Martín Pescador, I wish to strengthen my work with Novica. ¡Muchas gracias!"
