Ceramic tree of life sculpture, 'Cross of Peace'

A cross bursts into bloom and becomes a garden where songbirds offer an inspiring melody of hope. In the center, a dove brings a message of peace to the world. Handcrafted by ceramist Jaime Esquivel, this exquisite cross is inspired by the traditional trees of life and painted in joyous hues – a celebration of death, of life, and of faith.

"I could have done many other things with my life. Instead, I chose to follow in parents' footsteps. Art runs through their veins, and with their hands mom and dad taught me the ceramist's craft. We come from Metepec, renowned for its ceramic legacy. I am proud to call myself a ceramist, it is something I do with much love and pride for I am contributing to the preservation of my village’s tradition.

"Metepec's ceramic tradition is vast and versatile, but I chose to specialize in the árbol de la vida or tree of life because it allows my imagination to run free. I like to fill my trees with as much color and shapes as possible. I do everything by hand, from kneading the clay, sculpting each figurine and leaf, and painting each one by hand after they've dried and baked. This part of the process takes the longest. I also enjoy crafting ornamental crosses, suns and butterflies.

"I am very happy to be part of the Novica family because I am certain that each one of my pieces will arrive to the hands of those who respect art and the different traditions around the world."
