    'Wild Rhythms of Africa II'

Powerful drumbeats set the mood for honoring tradition through this painting by Asayaw Osahene Asante. He depicts a man dressed in the attire of northern Ghana, surrounded by adinkra symbols. To Ghanaians, these symbols are part of life. The word originates from the Akan language and refers to printed symbols bearing traditional messages.

    Asayaw Osahene Asante

Asayaw Osahene Asante is a young artist born in 1978 in Kumasi, known as the garden city of Ghana. After his primary and elementary education, he studied at the college of art and industry.

His family was very disappointed when he elected to study drawing rather than textile design, which they thought would offer him a better source of income. Asante had started to draw at the age of seven, and sculpt at the age of 11, so he felt driven to pursue what he describes as his 'mission impossible.'

By the time he graduated from college in 1997, Asante was already participating in group exhibitions. He always uses Ashanti colors for his paintings, because they look very traditional while his favorite medium is acrylic. "I am very impulsive and with acrylics I can paint faster than usual," he says. "Oils slow me down."

"I get inspired to paint just by looking at nature. My motivation comes from my admiration of renowned artists. One day, people will see my work and consider me an important artist too."
