    Ceramic statuette, 'Tomato Vendor'

A young woman walks through the market with a tray of ripe tomatoes on her head. Her clothing is minimal in the hot, humid afternoon, but she wears beads and earrings. "In southern Ghana, some women dress this way," Azariah Norteye explains. He depicts the merchant in a ceramic figurine.

An artisan story card will be included with your purchase.

"I became an artist through my grandfather, who was a painter and used to draw and paint. The nature of my profession is an interesting one among the lot. It is interesting because the outcome of everything is based on imagination and creativity. This has become a part of me and I cannot live without it.

"I use clay, kaolin, water, a gas or firewood kiln, molds, and a pug-mill to create all my designs. It starts like this. First of all, I mix my clay and kaolin with water for some hours then I keep it in a cool place to dry. After that, I take it to the purging room to be well mixed without lumps. I then choose any mold of my choice, start molding and then take the piece to a dry place. Finally, I take it for firing.

"I was born on October 24, 1961, at Osu in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, and learned the craft through a school. I have trained so many people, and they are now using the craft as their profession.

"Financial problems and the marketing of my work are the greatest challenges I do face.

"I am happily married with three children. My favorite things in life are to read poetry and to go and work in my studio. What always inspires me is that I use clay to create anything that comes my way.

"Things have not been easy with me, but I know with a little help from Novica, I will have a bright future."

Azariah Norteye has exhibited his art at in South Africa and also in Ibadan-Nigeria.
