    'Yesterday' (2004)

Glittering golden arcs recall the tumi, or ceremonial knives used by pre-Hispanic Andean cultures. The pebbled texture alludes to the peanut, a food staple, and the forms themselves represent ornaments found in the tomb of the Lord of Sipan. Teodoro Reque Liza conjures gold, water and a luminous sky. "This alludes to the Moche culture that developed on the northern coast of Peru," he says.

"The darker area represents the time spent underground by these artifacts. The lighter zone symbolizes their discovery. But at the same time they make reference to the duality in ancient thought – life and death, tears and laughter, good and evil. My palette represents the sky, the day, the sacred sun."

    Titled "Ayer" in Spanish.

    Teodoro Reque Liza

Teodoro Reque, born in Chiclayo in 1958, is a self-taught artist - apart from some art courses he has taken in different institutions, his formation as a painter is the result of continuous practice of the art, observation of nature and personal reflection. His abstract themes are drawn from Andean inspiration and he recreates memories of ancient Peruvian cultures and their relationships to the present. The innovation of his art can be seen in the singular style of his compositions and the harmony that he achieves through his subtle running together of colors.

"Even though I have forged a different professional career, ever since adolescence I've felt attracted by art. However, it wasn't until 1990 that I dedicated myself entirely to painting, reaffirming, perhaps, the influence of an artistic family. I've oriented my pictorial work toward an abstract tendency, all the while conserving the cultural roots of my country. My artistic ability reaps me intimate satisfaction and fills within me a spiritual void, revitalizing me.

"My work is methodical. Before beginning I make a preliminary sketch right on the canvas, changing the color scheme as the work progresses. The tones are my major concern, given that they are my language, and from there we can see serene skies that promise peace. No work is finished until it satisfies my spirit - I must find harmony, color and form. Sometimes even after I've already signed a painting I continue working on it.

"I've participated in four individual exhibitions and about a hundred collective ones. I've participated in national contests and was one of the selected artists in the Fine Arts Biennial in 1996.

"I hope to show my works through Novica because it is far reaching and offers a chance for my art to become known and to spread my country's culture."

Teodoro Reque's paintings, from an abstract perspective but with Andean inspiration, attempt to establish continuity between the past and present.
