    Ga wood mask, 'Divine Ruler'

Nii Okaija Annan honors the history of the Ga people of Ghana with a handsome mask. It personifies King Tackie, regarded as one of the best rulers the Ga people ever had, thus considered a Divine Ruler. Hand-carved from sese wood, the mask is detailed with embossed aluminum plates representing tribal scarifications.

    Nii Okaija Annan

Nii Okaija Annan was born on July 28, 1979 in Accra, where he completed his education. He attended the Social Advance Institute to study a two-year course in computer engineering. At the same time he was studying a three-year course in African history and sculpture at a specialized institute in Madina, a suburb of Accra. As his studies progressed, Nii Okaija's enthusiasm for crafts and sculptures increased and motivated him to do a training course at Ga-Mashie's workshop. In this way, Nii was fully living his passion for African arts.

Once he qualified as a carver, Nii Okaija joined the Carvers' Association, and perfected his skills with renowned Ghanaian sculptors Nana Osei Bonsu and Nii Odartey Lamptey. A certified carver, Nii Okaija is proud of his knowledge of his country's history and art. He specializes in tribal masks, jewelry boxes, drums, and royal stools.

"The reason I am inspired to carve is because in the past, culture played a major role in the lives of our forefathers," confides Nii Okaija.
