Expressionist Painting from Africa, "Northern Drummers"

Dynamic line and sizzling color capture the excitement of drummers from northern Ghana. Playing donno drums, they signal the arrival of the chief to the ground of the durbar. Durbars are ceremonial occasions marking significant events of a region's people, such as an annual festival, the monarch's anniversary or a royal occasion. At these gatherings the kings meet with their constituents, enveloped by much fanfare, drumming and dancing. Francis Amoah's works capture the essence of West African life.
